Okay . . .  so this might be a stretch.
But it caught my eye.

Very Old

On vacation in the Black Hills area this past week, we spent a few hours at Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, SD.

A sink hole formed about 26,000 years ago. It filled with water. Thirsty animals fell in and couldn't get out. With time, this filled in and was preserved.
When a plan for land development scratched the surface in 1974, its value was quickly realized!

As we toured the rim of the excavation an international group of folks from Earthwatch was . . . carefully . . . slowly . . . working to uncover bones . . .  all within a beautiful building. Pretty impressive.

Here's more information about the volunteer group working at the site during July.

http://www.earthwatch.org/default.aspx

The fossil bones of Columbian and woolly mammoths
are found scattered throughout the sinkhole. Snails were discovered at the edge!

Big

A tiny picture of something big:

Galaxy Snail

This shows the
beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 5584.

NGC 5584 was first spotted as a faint glow
in the constellation of Virgo by the great visual observer
E. E. Barnard, back in 1881

 @
It measures 50,000 light-years across
and lies 72 million light-years away toward the constellation Virgo.

I Did It !

On Saturday, July 14th, I participated in my first 5K race!

What a fine thing it is to set a goal
and work to attain it.
Hard to explain.
But
powerful
in my mind.

Details:
Venue: Henning, MN Plozine Run/Walk
Fuel: bagel, peanut butter, honey, banana slices
Strategy: walk/run, repeating as needed
Time: 40:49

Favorite Things:
The chip on my shoe!

MY number, 37, held with four safety-pins.

: )
[How's that for a contrast in technology?!!!]

          . . . . .
Running next to lawn sprinklers along the way.
Being out in the country under the sky . . . greetings from crows and cardinals.

My power-walking sister-in-law, Faith, cheering me on!
"Go, Girl!"
[She improved her time over her first race, last year!]

Seeing Colleen and Faith as I reached the finish line . . .  and knowing, I DID IT!

Finishing in the chute.
Watermelon slices after the race!

Thank YOU
friends and family:
for all the good wishes,
for encouragement,
and for helpful
suggestions!

I did it!

Possibilities!
What new thing do you imagine you could do?
Learn about it. Set a goal. Enlist support.
Think you can.

What Did You Say?

Day 76

that fits on or around an ear.

Ear Snail

A Truth About Snails:
"Snails don't have ears [or even one ear!!!] but instead use their bottom set of tentacles to pick up sound vibrations in the air."

Brewed

Day 91
Challenge: Use coffee, in some form.

 Coffee Snail No. 1
[mostly painted]

Coffee Snail No. 2
[mostly dripped]

Notes:
As I worked, I made up little techniques for controlling area and intensity.
I am, once again, curious to work in the fluid land of watercolor!
That is a nice surprise.

Kudos to those artists who jump into watercolor with both feet!
 I name four, here:

Ellen Eilers, the neighborhood artist of my childhood  . . . and now everyone's artist!
http://elleneilers.com/
 *
The late Dr. G. Korte, our talented and patient watercolor instructor.
St. Cloud State College
 *
Joyce Young, Hutchinson's own!

*
Marion Caroline, whom I met recently at Gallery North in Bemidji.

A short story for the Right Brain:
Today I ran/walked a 5k on the treadmill in the cool basement!
'Nothing record breaking or award winning . . .  but I did it!  :)
It felt GrEaT!

Information for the Left Brain:
3.2 miles
41:16 minutes
average 4.5 mph
average 12.0 minute mile
301 calories burned

Note to Self: 'Nice job incorporating your coursework themes.
Another Note to Self: The Henning 5K is just 11 days away!

Today I took pictures of these two garden snails!

                       Thank you, E!

Today I, once again, began creating a snail!
It will be an answer to the Day 91 challenge: Use coffee.

I have two ideas in the works:
1. Painting with coffee.
2. Concentric coffee stains.

I'll post pictures soon!

[How would you use coffee?]
